The effect is comprised of multiple elements including pre-baked physics with multiple dust, debris, smoke and spark particle effects, triggered by a custom script.
An alpha mask shader is used, meaning the effects will work on any flat surface with no need to cut a hole in the ground
A simple cube is used to break the ground as an example; this can easily be replaced with your own elements such as a character's hammer attack or a meteor hit.
